About
Dr. Janet Payne
Hello, there. You have arrived at my site for some particular reason - and I am hopeful that I have something to offer that matches what you have come seeking. Are you searching for meaning and considering a life change? Are you struggling with relationship issues and want to rebuild trust after an affair, not quite sure how you will ever find forgiveness? Have you or your child been diagnosed with ADD or dyslexia and are you seeking strategies that may help? Are you a young adult trying to figure out what to do after high school or post secondary - not quite sure of your next best steps? Do you struggle with anxiety and depression and often feel overwhelmed with the demands of life? Are you starting to experience the symptoms of perimenopause and wonder how you will cope with the demands of children and elderly parents when you don't feel quite right, yourself? My person-centred approach to counselling respects that YOU are the expert in your own life - and my role is to help you clarify goals that you wish to set for yourself and strategies and actions that you may take to achieve those goals.
What I have to offer you is a combination of formal training as a counselling therapist, along with my life experience as a mother of seven, and wife to my partner of 34 years. Life has not always been easy or straightforward, and the lessons we have learned have come from a rich life of trial and error, joy and sorrow, success and failure, and ups and downs. It is this ebb and flow of life that makes it worth living, and it is from this real life perspective that I hope to work with you on whatever challenges you wish to overcome.

My approach to individual therapy includes setting goals for what it is you want to work on, and offering a variety of techniques that may help you achieve these goals. Are you struggling with anxiety? Do you feel consistently sad and depressed? Are you facing a significant life transition like perimenopause/menopause or separation/divorce and need support while you move through this liminal space? Do you long for a life that feels more meaningful? Are you struggling in your work and feel the need to make a change? Do you have more specific challenges you need to address like ADD, learning disabilities, eating disorders, or addictions? Individual counselling may be for you, and may be covered under your health benefits.
Balancing the demands of life while maintaining healthy relationships can be a challenge for many people. I offer a safe and non-judgmental place for you and your loved ones to improve your communication skills, tackle hard questions around the use of your finite resources like time and money, and search for solutions when it comes to parenting young children and adolescents alike. Couples who have gone through infidelity and who want to work towards healing their relationships may also be interested in seeking couples therapy - where my approach includes looking at the role of both people within the relationship in an attempt to address the underlying causes of infidelity as well as the immediate and long term need for forgiveness and love. Rebuilding trust is not an easy process, but worthwhile for those couples interested in moving forward together.
The synergistic power of a group of women coming together to support one another can be life changing, even when they have only just met for a brief period of time. I offer sacred women's retreats in a beautiful scenic location on the Bras d'Or Lake several times each year - where participants are immersed in the healing landscape of rural Cape Breton while they support one in other in a search for life meaning. Have you contemplated the meaning of YOUR life? Do you long for a connectedness to something greater than yourself and get excited at the idea of spending time celebrating your intuition? Please check out the testimonials to hear what previous participants have said about past retreats.
